Biography

Amelia J. Calver's family emigrated from England in about 1849, and went to stay at a cottage at Mount Lebanon's North Family in 1850. Her father indentured her to the Shakers in 1850; though there were nine children in the family, only she and one of her sisters remained Shakers. She went to live at the Church Family, and attended the Church Family school from 1854-1858. In 1864, she became an assistant to Anna Dodgson, who taught at the school, and from 1866-1887, she was a teacher. In 1887, she was named Second Eldress of the Church Family, a position she held until 1917. In the 1880s, she participated in a Family Union Circle, which focused on intellectual rather than spiritual topics of discussion. She also wrote extensively, producing songs, poetry and essays, dozens of which were published in the Shaker Manifesto. In 1889, Fowler and Wells published her book, Everyday Biography, which contained 1,400 brief biographies organized by day of the year, intended for the use of teachers, students, and those seeking self-improvement. She also cared for family beehives.
