Shaker Museum | Mount Lebanon relies on the generous support of individuals to sustain vital work performed year-round preserving and interpreting Mount Lebanon’s North Family historic site, and conserving the world’s most diverse collection of Shaker objects. Join a growing community of people who share and support core values of communalism, innovation, integrity, conviction, tolerance, and education. These values were the essence of the Shakers’ beliefs and the foundation on which they built their spiritual practice, business endeavors, aesthetic and technological innovations, and social mission.
At Shaker Museum | Mount Lebanon we are also building foundations, literally and figuratively. As the laborious process of stabilizing the Great Stone Barn has shown, it takes enormous dedication, time, and human and financial capital to establish sure footing. We expect to open the Barn to the public with a new floor by the end of 2018 and you’ll hear more about that project in the coming year.
In the meantime, Shaker Museum | Mount Lebanon is emerging into a new era, with a reinvigorated public mission to steward the material legacy of the Shakers; foster a community of inquiry around core Shaker values and practices; and explore the relevance of Shaker principles to challenges faced in the present. We are well into a multi-year project, funded by a $750,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, to digitize and put online our superlative collection of Shaker objects and archives. With your support, a number of public programs are available this winter and plans are underway for the 2017 season at Mount Lebanon, including a celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York, and an installation of collections objects at the historic site.
These are anxious times, locally, nationally, and globally. The Shakers show us, when we most need to be shown, that to be American in the best possible expression of that term is to embrace community, care for our fellow human beings, and conduct ourselves with honesty and integrity in our endeavors.
In order to move forward, we need your help to build a strong foundation. Your support is crucial to creating the stability necessary to continue building.
