Basket

Quatrefoil base basket attributed to Sister Cornelia French, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY

Object ID:
1950.356.1
Community:
New York, Mount Lebanon
Description

Circular basket of black ash splint (light colored) with uprights and weavers 5/8" wide. Split rim with single lashing and double grip "ear handles." bottom has quatrefoil in the center, surrounded by circular weavers.

Notes

According to Martha Wetherbee, co-author of "Shaker Baskets," the quatrefoil weave is unique to baskets made at Mount Lebanon. A mold in the collection, 1950.2438.1, appears to be a match for this piece.
