Counter

Tailor's counter with bank of drawers on side, Mount Lebanon, NY

ca. 1840

Object ID:
1957.8636.1
Community:
New York, Mount Lebanon
Description

Work counter of pine, with tulip poplar drawer bottoms, and face-turned cherry pulls on drawers. Counter has two banks of four drawers opening to front and two banks of five drawers opening to proper right. What appears to be a frame and panel front cover over the banks of end drawers is actually a solid piece of wood routed out in the center with a fake rail applied over routed section at top and bottom. Exterior surfaces have a red wash. Drawers are flush but drawer fronts are slightly chamfered with center fields proud of the carcase. All drawers are beautifully dovetailed. Front drawers have two pulls per drawer, end drawers each have one. Counter was built into a corner so back and proper left end are unfinished.
