Description

Table (a) of red oak (Quercus rubria) with three splayed red maple (Acer rubrum) legs and two maple (Acer spp.) posts which secure the spinning head support post. Spinning head support is white ash (Fraxinus americana) and the lock pin and nut are maple (Acer spp.). Wheel (b) consists of a hub (painted red) and 12 spokes, all maple (probably red, Acer rubrum) and a two-piece rim of radial sawn white ash (Fraxinus americana). Laps are secured by both iron and copper tacks while the rim is secured to the spoke ends with cut iron brads. The axel hole in the hub is lined with an iron bushing. Wheel support post (c) of white ash (Fraxinus americana), turned between centers. A steel axle is through-bolted near the top of the post upon which the wheel turns. Commercially produced miner's head (d) of (mostly maple (Acer spp.). Head has been repaired/restored. Braided straw loops held missing spindle. Replacement turn-screws on maidens may be butternut (Juglans cinerea). Paper label glued to barrel-shaped component of head, largely illegible.

Shane Rothe

Curatorial Associate

Shane Rothe (they/them) joined Shaker Museum in July 2023, working with independent curator Maggie Taft on an exhibition for the new museum space in Chatham. Shane is an artist as well as a curator and continues to create in the mediums of painting, sculpture, writing, and performance. Shane holds a BFA from CalArts and an MA in art history and curatorial studies from the University of Chicago.
