Office and Store, Shaker Village, West Pittsfield Mass.

1905-1907

Object ID:
1951.4427.1
Community:
Massachusetts, Hancock
Description

The Office and Store in the Church Family of the Hancock Shakers is actually located in the town of West Pittsfield, therefore the West Pittsfield designation in the title of the postcard. The copyright on the card is 1905. In 1907 the U. S. Postal Service first allowed the backs of postcards to be divided into one side for the address and the other for a message. This non-divided back postcard then dates before September,1907. The photograph may date from an earlier period -- but not earlier than 1895 when the Hancock Shakers totally renovated the Office to look as it does on this card. The card is marked, "Copyright 1905 By The Rotograph Co."
