Description

Steam-bent maple round box rim with three swallow-tails secured by copper tacks. Rim fitted to round white pine header on the bottom, held by copper points. Painted red on the inside, outside, and underside of bottom.

Notes

This box was found in shoemaker's bench 1961.12839.1. The box originally contained a scrap of leather, probably a remnant from shoe-making or shoe repair, which has since been lost.

Shane Rothe

Curatorial Associate

Shane Rothe (they/them) joined Shaker Museum in July 2023, working with independent curator Maggie Taft on an exhibition for the new museum space in Chatham. Shane is an artist as well as a curator and continues to create in the mediums of painting, sculpture, writing, and performance. Shane holds a BFA from CalArts and an MA in art history and curatorial studies from the University of Chicago.
