The Library collects virtually anything related to the Shakers and materials generated by those interested in documenting and interpreting the Shaker experience.
It holds books and pamphlets about the Shakers and the areas in which they lived, extensive clipping files from magazines and newspapers, masters theses and doctoral dissertations, unpublished papers, auction and exhibition catalogues, catalogues of companies and individuals who manufacture replicas of Shaker furniture, and newsletters of museums and affinity groups involved with Shaker history.
The Library also holds some of the papers of individuals, collectors, authors, scholars, and museum professionals, who have been involved with studying the Shakers. These include the personal papers of Charles Adams, director of the New York State Museum, collectors Charles and Helen Upton, author Timothy Rieman, museum founder Amy Bess Miller, a research collection on Edward Deming Andrews and Faith Andrews assembled by Hugh Howard, a collection of materials pertaining to Jerome and Sybil Count and the Shaker Village Work Group, and the Robert and Viola Opdahl papers on Shaker music.
