Shaker Women: Profound Achievements and Simple Acts

Whether profound achievements or simple acts, great stories have something unexpected that is worth telling.

In celebration of National Women's History Month 2013 we featured the strange, funny, moving, yet not often told stories of twenty-one Shaker women. Read for yourself how extraordinary the stories of ordinary women can be. Click the link for 2013 below, then click on a woman's picture to learn more about her.

To mark National Women's History Month 2017, we selected portraits of influential Shaker women and their accompanying biographies to be highlighted at The Shaker, a bar in Hudson, New York. The images were exhibited beginning on Saturday, March 4 in celebration of the 281st birthday of Mother Ann Lee, founder of the Shakers, and as a preview for the museum's 2017 season exploring Shaker women and women's activism in recognition of the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in New York State.
