Endurance Reading of Mother Ann's "Testimonies" at 24-HOUR DRONE

Join us to participate in the first endurance reading of the 1816 Testimonies of Mother Ann Lee, presented by Shaker Museum | Mount Lebanon at the Basilica Hudson’s annual 24-HOUR DRONE: Experiments in Sound and Music on April 29-30.

Mother Ann Lee, the illiterate daughter of a blacksmith in Manchester, England, was the mystic and visionary founder of the Shakers. She placed gender equality, pacifism, and a profound sense of community at the core of the Shakers’ beliefs and the Testimonies, a compilation of her statements and the memories of those who knew her, is a foundational Shaker text.

The Testimonies will be read in its entirety over an estimated ten hours, beginning at 2:00 pm on April 29. To participate, please email programs@shakerml.org. Include your name and contact information, and indicate your top three preferences among the following time slots:

  • 1. 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
  • 2. 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  • 3. 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
  • 4. 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
  • 5. 10:00 pm – 12:00 am
  •

Each reader will be assigned a sequential number within the two-hour window and will be expected to read for 10 minutes. The text will be provided and there is no preparation necessary (though if you want to read all 400+ pages of the Testimonies, go right ahead!) Along with the opportunity to participate in this remarkable event, you’ll receive a free pass to 24-Hour Drone, a drink on the house, an adventure, encounters with cool people, and - just possibly - a moment or two of transcendence.

An immersive event and all-encompassing experience, 24-HOUR DRONE is a roving, international series presented by Basilica Hudson and Le Guess Who?, featuring musicians and sound artists experimenting within the spectrum of drone.

The first 24-HOUR DRONE was held in tandem with the Le Guess Who? festival in Utrecht, Netherlands in November of 2014, and featured William Basinski, Stephen O’Malley, Emptyset, Tim Hecker, Steve Hauschildt, Raime, Dirk Serries, Julianna Barwick, Carla Bozulich and John Eichenseer, and more.

Basilica Hudson is a non-profit multidisciplinary arts center in Hudson, NY, supporting the creation, production and presentation of arts and culture while fostering sustainable community.

Le Guess Who?, Basilica’s 24-HOUR DRONE curatorial partner, has become the Netherlands’ go-to event for experimental, collaborative and otherwise out-of-the-box musical thinking.
