Description

Square base to circular rim. Black ash splint. Uprights 3/8" - 3/4" wide, and weavers 3/8" - 1/2" wide. Double grip "ear" handles, 5/8" wide at widest point, double notched and come down on the outside (possibly machine made). Split rim with double lashing. Interior lined with dark leather that is tied onto area directly below rim; an area about 1" long below rim that lacks weavers. Lining comprised of multiple leather pieces roughly sewn together; 2" wide cleats (three on bottom).

Notes

Used to carry chips and kindling for stoves to and from the Dwelling House.

Shane Rothe

Curatorial Associate

Shane Rothe (they/them) joined Shaker Museum in July 2023, working with independent curator Maggie Taft on an exhibition for the new museum space in Chatham. Shane is an artist as well as a curator and continues to create in the mediums of painting, sculpture, writing, and performance. Shane holds a BFA from CalArts and an MA in art history and curatorial studies from the University of Chicago.
